discrimination in the workplace

Hello, my name is Rebecca and I am new to pinktooth. Well I am posting a topic because I am very upset and need to vent. furious So I was "let go" today. I was told by my employer that the reason being was because I "make my own work hours" this, of course is totally untrue. I didnt argue I just let him speak, all the time just thinking about our first interview. When I went in to interview for this man, I made it EXTREMELY clear to him that I am a part time student and that there would be days that I would need to either leave early or not be able to come in at all because of school, I also told him I would let him know alot in advance when this was the case. He AGREED at the time but, when I WOULD come to him to ask for time off for this specific reason, he would become angry and irritated. I would tell him 2 to 3 weeks in advance!! Now, the discrimination comes into place because there is a BOY, not a MAN, A BOY (hes sooooo inmature, and rude), that gets away with murder at the office. When he needs a day off, Dr. gives it to him GLADLY, no problem. He takes long lunches, comes and goes as he pleases, (and Dr. knows about it mind you) and doesnt say anything!! At the end of the day, Dr. would always ask him if he wanted to go home first if we had a late night at the office. Dr. takes him to lunch, and totally treats him better, everyone knows it, even the pts! Question? Am I overreacting? I dont think so. When I walked into work today, there was a BOY waiting apparently to take my position. I mean he always said, men are better workers then woman. Another thing I wanted to mention, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, he has HIT US GIRLS in the office! Not him though, he has put his hand and foot on me twice! I guess I need someones advice. I'm not upset I was let go, I just want this man not to get away with it. Help!!! What can I do?cry

Rebecca,
Thought I would log on to the forum to see what's going on.  Sounds like you have been though the ringer.  And it also sounds like you were working for a JERK.  My advise to you would be to press charges against the doctor.  Be prepared to prove the abuse because I would imagine that Dr. has and attorney and unfortunately dental assistants can't afford representation on our salary.  I would definitely report it to the State Board, though.  As far as his relationship with the young man, I have only heard your side, clearly.  This Boy may have a personal or family relationship with the doctor and they are not saying. Who knows.  My guess is that when you were hired, doctor only heard what he wanted to hear.  Most of the time it is the case.  Abuse in the workplace should NEVER be tolorated!! Abuse period should NEVER be tolorated!!! If you decide to file charges, you will need the cooporation from your previous co-workers.  Do you think that they would be willing to jeapordize their jobs?  If they were being abused too, they should cooporate with your request.  Good luck with your situation.  When you find another job, it probably would benefit you to not discuss with your new employer or new coworkers.  Reporting "stuff" to authorities tends to tag the individual as a risky employee.  Move forward with head held high!!  NO ONE DESERVES JERKS FOR A BOSS!!! I quit a job as an assistant because the doctor threw a tofflemire matrix at me chairside in front of the patient.  I just got up and told the doctor "I'm done and not coming back"  there are too many positions available to put up with mean people.

Hey thanks for the reply shirleylusk. I know I have moved on, my thing is just that I feel like this man needs to be stopped. I have placed a few complaints with the CDA about him. (Just to make sure) I was going to press charges but, I decided not to. I started thinking and you know what? God sees all, and he'll take care of him. Thats my thought, besides youre right. I cant afford a lawyer.......
